Biomedical Waste Management & Authorization
Safe Handling & Regulatory Compliance for Healthcare Waste
Safe Handling & Regulatory Compliance for Healthcare Waste
Biomedical Waste Management & Authorization is a mandatory requirement for healthcare facilities that generate waste during diagnosis, treatment, immunization, or research activities.
This is governed under the Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016, issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and implemented by State Pollution Control Boards.
The objective is to ensure that biomedical waste is handled in a way that prevents infection, environmental contamination, and public health risks.
Biomedical waste needs strict source-level control. Segregation, color-coded bins, CBWTF tie-up, barcoding, staff training, records, annual reporting, and renewal support must work together.
What is Biomedical Waste?
Biomedical waste includes any waste generated from healthcare activities that may be infectious or hazardous.
Common Examples:
Used syringes and needles

Laboratory waste and cultures
Expired medicines and pharmaceuticals
Who Requires Biomedical Waste Authorization?
Authorization is required for:
Hospitals and nursing homes
Clinics and diagnostic centers

Any facility generating biomedical waste must comply with these rules.
